Academic Calendars and Teaching Timetables

The Academic Calendar is published in advance each year and provides students easy access to all critical dates for each study year and semester. Please note that our Learning Management System (LMS) – Canvas contains further details about Teaching Timetables, including unit teaching dates and assessment dates for each Unit of Study. Please also refer to individual Student Study Guides provided for each Unit of study.

Academic Freedom, Integrity, and Free Intellectual Enquiry

Academic Freedom, Free Intellectual Enquiry and Expression are the cornerstone of critical enquiry and the defining characteristics of a Higher Education Provider. ADCI is committed to supporting academic freedom, integrity and free intellectual enquiry through all endeavours. Furthermore, one of the key functions of the Academic Board is to “facilitate free intellectual enquiry, encourage and support informed decision making by students, foster freedom of speech, support academic freedom and protect academic integrity”.

ADCI upholds the principle that academic integrity relies on applying honesty in all scholarly endeavours. Students will conduct themselves in their academic studies honestly and ethically and are expected to carefully acknowledge the work of others in all their educational activities. Behaviours that promote academic integrity include:

  • Acknowledging where the information used is sourced, with clear citations and references to the source material (Harvard Style)
  • Submitting your own work, and sitting your exams
  • Accurately reporting research findings, and abiding by research policies
  • Using information appropriately, according to copyright and privacy laws
  • Acting ethically and professionally

In order to promote academic integrity and honesty and minimise academic misconduct, including plagiarism, recycled work, fabricated information, cheating and collusion, the institution will provide students and staff guidance about proper scholarly practice, including academic integrity and honesty.

The Student Study Guide advises students about referencing requirements and academic conventions for using others’ work and advises avoiding plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct.

Additionally, all commencing students are required to complete and pass the Academic Integrity and Honesty Workshop. This workshop is available online and must be completed within the first two weeks of the first semester. Once completed, the Course Coordinator will provide students ongoing access to all other unit materials for semester one. The Course Coordinator may block your access to unit materials if you fail to complete the workshop requirements.

The Academic Integrity and Honesty Workshop covers behaviours that support academic integrity and those identified as academic misconduct. Students engage in activities and solve real-life problems to help them develop solid academic integrity and honest skillsets.

Course Progression and Exclusion

All students are required to meet the rules for course progression as outlined in the Student Progression and Exclusion Policy and Procedure. Students are encouraged to become familiar with this Policy.

The basic requirements to ensure suitable course progression is attained are outlined below:

  • Course Duration
    Students must meet the requirements of a course within a prescribed number of years from the date of first enrolment. This is normally the course duration specified on the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for overseas students studying on a student visa.
  • Applications for Extension of Time
    Students who fail to complete within the prescribed period and are reasonably expected to meet the course requirements within two additional study periods may apply for an extension. Each application will be considered on its merits and concerning the student’s academic performance.
  • Requirements to Attain Minimum Academic Standards
    Students are required to attain the following minimum academic standards to be deemed to be maintaining satisfactory academic progress in a course:

    – Not more than 1 Failure in a particular Unit of Study, and;
    – Not fail 50% or more of all units attempted in a single study period.

    The Course Coordinator monitors each student’s academic performance against the minimum academic standards at the end of each study period. Where a student has failed to meet the minimum academic standards, the Course Coordinator will deem that student ‘at risk’.
  • Students Deemed ‘At-Risk’
    The Course Coordinator will contact each student deemed to be ‘at risk’ and arrange an appointment for an academic counselling session. The student will also be advised of the possibility that conditions may be placed on their enrolment.
  • Students Who Continue Failing to Meet Minimum Academic Standards

    If an ‘at risk’ student fails to meet minimum academic standards after an intervention strategy has been implemented, the Course Coordinator will request that the student provide a written statement within twenty working days outlining reasons why they should be permitted to continue their enrolment in the course.

    A student permitted to continue their enrolment in the course but with conditions imposed, who again fails to attain the minimum academic standards or breaches the conditions imposed, will have their enrolment terminated due to unsatisfactory academic progress.

Attendance

All students are required to attend at least 80% of all scheduled lectures and tutorials for each Unit of Study.

The Course Coordinator will consider attendance in the following circumstances:

  • In the event a student has made an application for an extension of time, for failure to complete within the prescribed period of time, for each course, or;
  • Failure to achieve a minimum academic standard, as set out in the Student Progression and Exclusion Policy and Procedure, resulting in the student being considered ‘at-risk’.

For International Students (Students studying on an International Student Visa), the Course Coordinator will monitor academic progress at the end of each compulsory study period to determine if the student has met the minimum academic standards, and whether the student will be able to continue to complete their studies within the designated course duration.
